Learn how to maintain a more effective and accessible Design System at UXLx 2024
Maintaining design consistency, working more efficiently, building products faster, there’s a number of reasons design teams are using design systems for. But design systems also come with challenges. At UXLx we want to provide you with tools to get back to your organisation and maintain an even more effective and accessible design system.
In 2024, two of the workshops will focus on design systems. The first will shine a light into conducting an accessibility audit on our design system. In the second we’ll learn how we can deal with components that don’t seem to be provided by our system. Plus, a talk that will make us think about the promises design systems don’t deliver, and how to use them more effectively. Find out more about each bellow.
Auditing Design Systems for Accessibility by Anna Cook
As a Senior Inclusive Designer at Microsoft, Anna specialises in building inclusive products, focusing on accessibility and inclusion for Azure and beyond.
As a workshop facilitator at UXLx 2024, Anna will guide us in conducting an accessibility audit on our design systems to create more inclusive experiences.
Learn how to meet user needs and gain competitive advantages by building inclusive, user-friendly products. We’ll explore how to audit designs, client-side code, and documentation.
This practical session will equip you not only to perform audits but also to effectively communicate the results to gain support for further accessibility improvements.

Design System Clinic by Stephen Hay
An author, speaker and creative director, Stephen Hay has over 25 years of experience in digital design, and in solving difficult things in large and complex environments.
Building on the idea that design systems often don’t help us make good design decisions outside of component usage, Stephen will show us how a governance model and alignment process tailored to your own obstacles can help us.
We’ll dive into:
- Where design systems don’t deliver: setting boundaries vs pushing boundaries
- How to allow boundaries to be pushed (effectively and responsibly):
— What is an end-to-end governance model?
— What is a design and alignment process?
— What review rituals are needed?
- What review rituals are needed?
This goes beyond “system contribution”, because not everything that can be created and “fits” the design direction can (or should) become a part of the system.

Design System Lies by Stephen Hay
The Talks day at UXLx 2024 also has its own moment dedicated to Design Systems. Stephen will join us once more for a reflection on how design systems come with promises, but sometimes, though, they don’t deliver.
Our assumptions and expectations about such systems are partly to blame. But there is hope! By recognising design systems for what they are, we can use them more effectively.
